Start With Your Oikos: The People God Already Put in Your World

Almost everyone who cares about the Great Commission eventually asks the same question: where do I even start? The New Testament answer is closer and far more ordinary than we expect.

The word the New Testament keeps using

In Greek, oikos means household — but in practice it meant something wider than blood relatives. It described your web of relationships: family, extended family, close friends, neighbours, coworkers, the people whose lives genuinely touch yours.

Watch how often the Gospel moves along those lines. Levi throws a party for his colleagues and puts Jesus in the middle of it. Cornelius gathers his household and close friends before Peter arrives. The Philippian jailer believes "with his whole household." Lydia's home becomes the base for a church.

The Gospel did not primarily spread through strangers on street corners. It spread through trusted relationships — and it still does.

Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.

Your oikos is smaller than you fear

Most people have somewhere between 8 and 15 people in genuine relational proximity. That is it. That is your starting assignment — and it is wonderfully doable.

Something clarifying happens when you actually write those names down. The vague guilt of "I should evangelize more" turns into something specific and prayable: these people, by name.

Four steps that actually work

• Name them. Write the list. Vague intentions produce vague obedience.
• Pray for them daily. Short and specific beats long and occasional. Ask God for open doors and softened hearts — including your own.
• Serve before you speak. Practical love earns the right to be heard. Show up when it costs you something.
• Invite, don't corner. A meal, a conversation, a gathering. Invitation is hospitality; pressure is a sales tactic. People can always tell the difference.

Why this scales to the nations

Here is the beautiful part. Jesus did not say make converts, He said make disciples — people who can do this too. If you invest deeply in two people who each genuinely invest in two more, the arithmetic reaches the entire world in roughly a generation.

Addition reaches hundreds. Multiplication reaches the world. And multiplication always starts in an oikos.

What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.

A word if you feel unqualified

Good. That is the standard biblical starting position. Isaiah volunteered immediately after confessing he was a man of unclean lips. Availability has always mattered more to God than ability. He was never short on talent — He looks for people who will actually go.
