In 1967 Albania declared itself the world's first officially atheist state. Every church and mosque was closed, destroyed or repurposed. Owning a Bible was a crime. For over twenty years there was no legal Christian worship of any kind anywhere in the country.
The state fell in 1991. Within a generation Albania had Bible translation, evangelical congregations in most major towns, and a young Albanian-led church. It remains small — evangelicals are well under one percent — but it exists at all, which forty years ago looked impossible.
