How to Pray for Unreached Nations (A Simple Weekly Rhythm)

Most believers genuinely want to pray for the nations and quietly give up, because "the world" is too big to hold in your head. The fix is not more willpower. It is a smaller, more specific target.

Why prayer is the frontline, not the warm-up

We often treat prayer as preparation for the real mission work. Scripture treats it as the work that opens doors nothing else can. Jesus' own instruction, when He looked at a world of need, was not "recruit harder" — it was ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers.

That matters especially for the least-reached places. In much of the 10/40 Window, no missionary can legally enter. Prayer is not the fallback there. It is the primary access.

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

The rhythm: one nation, one week

Pick a single nation or people group and stay with it for a week. That is the whole method. It works because it converts a vague burden into something your mind can actually hold.

• Monday — learn. Spend five minutes reading about the nation: population, what percentage follow Jesus, what the Church there faces. Facts fuel real prayer.
• Tuesday — the Church there. Pray for existing believers: courage, protection, unity, and endurance. In many of these places following Jesus costs something.
• Wednesday — open doors. Pray for access — for Scripture in their language, for workers, for laws and hearts to soften.
• Thursday — the workers. Pray for those already there, often unnamed and unnoticed, and for local leaders being raised up.
• Friday — the lost by name. Ask God for dreams, encounters, and for the Gospel to reach people no one else can reach.
• Weekend — your own heart. Ask what your part is. Sometimes the answer to "send someone" is you.

What to actually ask for

If you are unsure what to pray, these six requests fit almost any unreached context:

• Access — that the Gospel would physically reach them.
• Scripture — over 1,800 languages still have no Bible.
• Local leaders — indigenous believers who can lead sustainably.
• Protection — for those who convert at real cost.
• Peace — war and instability close doors fast.
• Workers — the request Jesus explicitly told us to make.

The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers.

Make it stick

Put the nation's name somewhere you will see it — the fridge, your lock screen, a sticky note on your monitor. Pray with your kids at dinner. Tell one friend which nation you have taken this month so it stops being private and becomes shared.

And be honest about the timescale. You may pray for a people group for years and never see the result yourself. That is not failure; that is intercession. Many of today's breakthroughs — Iran, Algeria, parts of Central Asia — are answers to prayers prayed by people who died before the harvest came.
