Where the church stands in Afghanistan
Afghanistan has no public church. Since 2021 the small community of Afghan believers has lived almost entirely underground, meeting in twos and threes, often unknown even to each other. Conversion from Islam is treated as apostasy, and the cost is frequently a person's family, livelihood or life.
And yet the church has not disappeared. Afghan believers meet by phone and encrypted message, listen to Scripture in Dari and Pashto through audio Bibles and radio, and disciple one another across borders from Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and Europe. The Afghan diaspora has become one of the main routes the Gospel now travels back home.
Signs of hope
Scripture is now available in Dari and Pashto in audio and print, and Afghan believers in the diaspora are discipling family members still inside the country.
The honest difficulty
No legal church, no public gathering, and a believing community small enough that isolation is itself a spiritual danger.
What "Frontier" means
The least-reached category: fewer than 1 in 1,000 follow Jesus and there is no indigenous Gospel movement large enough to grow on its own. Most people here will never meet a Christian.
