Where the church stands in Sudan

In 2020, after the fall of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan's transitional government abolished the crime of apostasy — a breakthrough for believers who had lived under the threat of death for leaving Islam. The window did not last. A coup in 2021 was followed in April 2023 by war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The war has created what the United Nations describes as the largest displacement crisis in the world, with famine confirmed in parts of the country. Churches in Khartoum and elsewhere have been bombed, looted or occupied. Christians, concentrated in the Nuba Mountains and among southern communities, are caught between the fighting.

What "Unreached" means

There is no indigenous community of believing Christians large enough to evangelise the rest of the nation without outside help. Commonly measured as under 2% evangelical.

In Sudan the majority religious context is Islam (~91%). The largest population still considered without meaningful Gospel access is the Sudanese Arab, Beja, Fur and many other Muslim peoples.

How to pray for Sudan

Prayer is not a substitute for going; it is how going begins. Take one of these for a week rather than all of them for a day.
