How many people have never heard the Gospel?

About 2.3 billion people have no meaningful access to the Gospel — no nearby church, no Scripture in a language they understand, no believing friend. Nobody can count exactly who has "never heard", but around 1.9 billion live in frontier people groups where fewer than 1 in 1,000 follow Jesus.

Three different numbers

2.3 billion is the number of people without meaningful access. 3.6 billion live within unreached people groups — a larger figure, because some individuals in those groups do have access. 1.9 billion live within frontier groups, the least reached of all.

None of these is the same as the number of Christians — a common confusion, since Pew's 2020 count of Christians was also about 2.3 billion.
